Status Quo of Current Domestic Transportation in The Mekong Delta region and recommendation to improve its efficiency
Although the Mekong Delta has a dense system of canals and territories, it has not taken full advantages of waterways yet, while the road system is increasingly under pressure from transportation. Developing road system entails in a lot of requests of infrastructure construction, increasing costs due to weak geology, relatively low topographies, costly and complex reinforced foundation. There is almost no rail and because of high cost, air transport is not suitable for agricultural and fishery products export ... Taking everything into consideration, in both short term and long term, investment in developing domestic waterways network for container transportation and connecting other methods to transport not only takes advantage of the natural advantages but also brings economic optimal efficiency.
